“The Battle” by Melinda McDonnell

That Lady Friend of Mine
by Melinda McDonnell

You may be at war
on a battlefield
but, the worst fight
Is the one going on in my chest.
It hurts my heart to know
you are afraid even doing
what you love and
what you love can cause
you such great pain
I’ll never forget your blue eyes,
shining under the stars,
hearing you talk about
your one and only love
going to war.

Genre: Poetry

Bio: My name is Melinda. I am 19 years old. I’ve gone through a lot in my short life, and poetry has helped me keep my head above water. My heart out weighs my mind. I grew up with a large family. I learned to love from them. I learned how to stand up for what I believe in, and I learned how to take criticism.

Piece: The Battle

Piece Description: My piece was inspired by my brother who just recently left for Iraq.
