Programming
National Parks of the First Coast and the Golden Isles is a 90 minute local documentary about the area’s national parks. This program will feature living examples of some of the best things our National Parks have to offer; spectacular natural landscapes and places that reflect our diverse culture and heritage. Residents and visitors to our local national park sites can learn about our nation’s history, such as the struggle and meanings of freedom at Kingsley Plantation; the battles over territory and nation-state at Castillo de San Marcos, Fort Matanzas, and Fort Frederica; the desire for religious freedom in a new land at Fort Caroline. National Parks of the First Coast and the Golden Isles will celebrate the unique people who have helped tell and preserve the stories of important moments of our American history. This project is not only a single-event documentary, but will expand its outreach capabilities by creating stand-alone mini-documentary features about the individual parks, multiple “untold stories” radio stories featured on WJCT 89.9 FM leading up to the initial broadcast, and multiple “webisodes” that will be streamed on WJCT’s and the individual parks’ websites.

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea
PBS will air Ken Burns and Florentine Films’ six-part series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. The 12-hour, six-part documentary series, directed by Burns and co-produced with his longtime colleague, Dayton Duncan, who also wrote the script, is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone.
