(Jacksonville, FL, January 14, 2014); WJCT invites all students from kindergarten through third grade to write and illustrate original stories for the annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest, a national initiative that promotes the advancement of children’s reading and writing skills through hands-on, active learning.  The contest is open to public, private and home-schooled students in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties. Entries must be received by March 7, 2014. Entries must be accompanied by an official entry form and must comply with the official rules, both available online at wjct.org/writers.

WJCT will select local winners and award prizes, with winning stories posted online at wjct.org/writers. Local winners will be entered into the national contest. National winners will be announced and prizes, including tablet computers, e-readers and MP3 players, will be awarded during the summer of 2014, and the winning stories will be featured on pbskids.org/writerscontest.

The PBS Kids Writers Contest is supported by robust resources for children, parents and teachers. Story ideas, activity sheets, and the previous winning entries are available at pbskids.org/writerscontest to inspire children during the brainstorming process.
