We started the show with Jacksonville Firefighters Association President Randy Wyse. He discussed the mayor’s proposed budget solutions and how they will affect the paychecks of local firefighters. Wyse also told us about the union’s effort to prevent budget cuts and their upcoming decision on political endorsements.
Reuben Brigety is the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, but he’s also a First Coast native and a graduate of Sandalwood High School, the U.S. Naval Academy, and Cambridge University. He joined us by phone to tell us about his diplomatic missions around the world, his quick rise through the Washington ranks, and how he maintains ties to his home.
Louis Sullivan, called “the father of the skyscraper,” was a visionary architect who had a profound influence on architecture. A new film documenting Sullivan’s career and vision, including his influence on Frank Lloyd Wright and other notable architects, will screen this weekend in Jacksonville. Dr. Wayne Wood, historic preservationist and founder of the Riverside Arts Market, told us more about the film titled “Louis Sullivan: the Struggle for American Architecture.” The event is July 18th at 2pm and 7pm in the 5 Points Theatre.
The new PBS documentary “Breakfast Special” celebrates the most important meal of the day. The program, airing tonight at 8pm and encoring Friday, July 16th at 9:30pm, will feature a St. Augustine restaurant that serves breakfast all day long. Manny Herrera runs La Herencia with his wife Janett and he joined us by phone to tell us about the cuisine at this Cuban cafe.
I plan to attend one of the showings of “Louis Sullivan: the Struggle for American Architecture” this Sunday. I recently video-ed Klutho’s buildings around town with the aid of Dr. Woods book on Jacksonville’s architecture and was hoping Dr. Wood would be in attendance. Any info would be appreciated.
Roger, just saw your comment, hope you made it to the screening. I am sure Dr. Wood was there!
