WJCT Commemorates 10th Anniversary of 9/11

Remembrance Programs Include Local News Features, Local TV Special and Full Day of TV Programming on September 11
(Jacksonville, FL, Sept. 1, 2011); WJCT will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with radio and television programs dedicated to the remembrance. Local coverage on 89.9 WJCT-FM in the week leading up to 9/11 includes feature stories by WJCT’s news team and special guests on WJCT’s call-in radio program, First Coast Connect. On Sunday, September 11, WJCT-TV dedicates its entire schedule to remembrance programming, beginning at 11:30 a.m. with 9/11 Tenth Year Commemoration, a WJCT production showcasing the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission’s event at the Jacksonville Landing. PBS programs airing on WJCT-TV on September 11 include a one-hour PBS NewsHour special at 8 p.m. and a remembrance / renewal concert from Great Performances at 10 p.m., as well as FRONTLINE and NOVA episodes.

89.9 WJCT-FM
89.9 Feature Stories. WJCT’s news team presents a series of in-depth news reports in the week leading up to 9/11. On Sept. 7, WJCT News Director Scott Kim examines how Northeast Florida’s Muslim community sees the remembrance. On Sept. 8, Producer/Reporter Cyd Hoskinson reports on young people who have grown up with the threat posed by Al-Qaeda. On Sept. 9, Senior Reporter/Producer Kevin Meerschaert looks at how life changed after 9/11 for the majority of Americans, and at security measures we now take for granted. The reports will air at 6:35 and 8:35 a.m. during Morning Edition and at 5:44 p.m. during All Things Considered on 89.9 WJCT-FM.
First Coast Connect. Host Melissa Ross features a selection of guests on WJCT’s call-in radio program. On Sept. 7, she talks with New York Times bestselling author Dennis Smith about his recent book, A Decade of Hope. On Sept. 9, she hosts national security analyst Daphne Eviatar. She also talks with Kat Nesbitt and Marjorie Farley, two women from Southeast Georgia who lost loved ones on 9/11, and Episcopal Bishop Samuel Johnson Howard and his wife Marie, who were serving near Ground Zero on 9/11. First Coast Connect airs weekdays at 9 a.m. on 89.9 WJCT-FM.

FRONTLINE – Top Secret America (Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 8 at 9 p.m.). FRONTLINE and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dana Priest ask how a decade of fighting terrorism has reshaped the country and whether it has made us safer.

9/11 Tenth Year Commemoration (11:30 a.m. and 9 p.m.). As the nation marks the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, WJCT broadcasts the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission’s commemorative event, featuring local dignitaries and leaders of the First Coast who reflect on the impact of that historic day. Taped at the Jacksonville Landing on Sept. 6, 2011.
September’s Children (12:30 p.m.). This program explores the effects of war and terrorism on children, revisiting 9/11 through the eyes of elementary school children near Ground Zero and traveling to war zones around the globe to investigate techniques being used to treat young victims of emotional trauma.
For the Love of Their Brother (1:30 p.m.) A family comes together to honor their youngest brother, a firefighter who perished at Ground Zero, by founding the annual “Tunnel to Towers Run.”
America’s Veterans: A Musical Tribute (2 p.m.) A star-studded salute to the U.S. Armed Forces, this concert features performances by Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Peter Cetera, American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle and country music band Lonestar, accompanied by the Air Force Orchestra. Blair Underwood hosts.
Marina at West Point: Unity Through Diversity (3 p.m.). Award-winning concert pianist/composer Marina performs patriotic melodies and her original compositions with the acclaimed West Point Band and West Point Cadet Glee Club.
4Troops: Live from the Intrepid (4 p.m.). This program features 4Troops, the pop vocal group made up of U.S. combat veterans who served on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their concert special, filmed aboard the USS Intrepid, features standards like “Amazing Grace,” pop hits like “You Raise Me Up” and new gems, including the group’s own “For Freedom.”
FRONTLINE – Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero (5 p.m.) This critically acclaimed film explores how peoples’ beliefs — and unbelief — have been challenged since September 11, and how they are coping with difficult questions of good and evil, God’s culpability and the potential for darkness within religion itself. The film illuminates the many spiritual questions that have come out of the terror, pain and destruction at Ground Zero. (Also airs Wed., Sept. 7 at 10 p.m.)
NOVA – Engineering Ground Zero (7 p.m.) This program follows the five-year construction of One World Trade Center (1 WTC) and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. (Also airs Wed., Sept. 7 at 9 p.m.)
PBS NewsHour – America Remembers 9/11 (8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.). PBS NewsHour presents a one-hour special broadcast commemorating the 10th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. The PBS NewsHour team will examine the significance of the day in many different communities across the nation.
Great Performances – The New York Philharmonic 10th Anniversary Concert for 9/11 (10 p.m.) The New York Philharmonic, under conductor Alan Gilbert, with guest soloists and the New York Choral Artists, performs Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection.”
